Mesa College Continuing Education Center
San Diego, CA

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Continuing Education Mesa College Campus (formerly, Clairemont/Linda Vista – Land Acquisition & Building) is a new two-story, 38,500 square feet facility consolidating programs currently offered in temporary classrooms at Clairemont High School, rented facilities and community and neighborhood locations. The facility accommodates English as a Second Language, Disability Support Programs and Services, Parent/Child programs, and Emeritus programs for adults age 55+. It includes classrooms, art labs, a kitchenette, an outdoor play area, a ceramics yard and administrative support space.

WHAT SUNBELT CONTROLS DELIVERED

Through campus weather station data, when outdoor conditions permit, the integrated energy management system and natural draft system reduce the load on the mechanical HVAC system. The energy management system not only enables the electronic natural draft system, but controls zone level motorized exterior windows. The HVAC system operation is automatically reset to obtain the maximum amount of savings. Instructors retain individual window operational control through wall mounted energy management system override switches. Each wall mounted zone switch has LED illumination to reflect system status and when conditions are conducive to natural draft ventilation.

Significant energy savings are also achieved through the integration of the energy management and lighting systems. HVAC and lighting systems are automatically and simultaneously reset in unoccupied areas, while effectively utilizing daylight harvesting. Main spaces are grouped along the building’s perimeter; large windows and light shelves provide daylighting for these spaces. Internal areas are day-lit through solar tubes that bring light down into the interior from the roof.

The project is certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
