Azusa Pacific University
Segerstrom Science Center
Azusa, CA

Azusa Pacific University is well-known for excellence in higher education among top Christian colleges and universities, and is ranked as one of the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report & the Princeton Review.  In line with its commitment to create a top ranking Christian-based science center, APU contracted with C.W. Driver to build this facility.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

Segerstrom Science Center is a 70,470 SF facility that includes a 90-seat lecture hall, 26 classrooms, 37 teaching & research laboratories, NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) & electron microscope rooms, an animal research facility, faculty offices, student study & community areas, and APU’s Center for Research in Science.

WHAT SUNBELT DELIVERED

Designed as a facility that would help to promote interdisciplinary study, the Segerstrom Science Center is the first new facility to be built on the expanding West Campus of the university, positioning it to set the tone for further development.  Specific building elements include 23 teaching labs, 9 research modules, the equivalent of 14 lab support modules, a glass wash area, stockrooms, and a 1,500 SF vivarium for small animals.

Running along the entire northern face are glass channels punctuated with clear glass windows; the glass channels distribute even light throughout the laboratories while the windows provide views to the mountains. The glass provides a rich contrast to the multicolored cement panels used on the rest of the façade. Sunbelt Controls performed a full install of a DDC System consisting of controls for 6 air handlers, 3 chillers, 2 boilers, 112 VAVs, 4 FCUs, 9 exhaust fans, 3 Phoenix Fume Hood exhaust fans, and a room pressure monitoring system.  Construction Started in October 2007 and the building was occupied in May of 2009.
